Bokeo Province < < Back

Location: a northwestern province famous its location within the Golden Triangle (three-bordered intersection of Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand) and at the Economic Quadrangle, the corridor where Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and China meet.

Natural Protected Areas: Nam Kan Provincial Protected Forest

Main Ethnic Groups: Lanten, Hmong, Lahu, Yao, Akha, Tai Lue

Ecotourism Attractions: Bokeo has both mountains and ethnic minority villages in the
east and the Mekong River and lowland Lao populations to the west. It was recently
discovered that Bokeo has one of the last remaining populations of Black-cheeked
Gibbon in Laos. An innovative canopy forest camp, called the Gibbon Experience, has been developed to provide travelers with the opportunity to see/hear the Black-cheeked Gibbon. From Houeixai you can make day trips to ethnic Lantaen villages where production of traditional saa paper and other crafts can be

seen. For mountain biking enthusiasts, Road 3 from Bokeo to Luang Namtha is a challenging trip, which can be done in two days, and offers an excellent variety of mountain landscapes and ethnic minority communities.
