Luang Prabang Province < < Back

Location: Located in the center of the northern region of Laos

Natural Protected Areas: Nam Et & Phou Louei National Protected Area

Main Ethnic Groups: Hmong, Khmu, Tai Lue, and Lao

Ecotourism Attractions: Luang Prabang’s main attraction is the Luang Prabang UNESCO World Heritage Town, which is known for its Buddhist temples and French colonial architecture. Visiting the temples and historic sites helps support their protection and maintenance. The night market in Luang Prabang has a display of locally produced handicrafts unmatched in the region; purchasing the crafts supports local artisans and traditional production techniques. Alternatively, you can visit many of the villages that produce the crafts to see the way handicrafts are made and also buy directly from the producers.

Luang Prabang has recently become a popular destination for community-based ecotourism.

There are some good treks in Chomphet district located very close to Luang Prabang Town. Kwangsi Waterfall, typically visited by car, now has an alternative walking route that follows a foot path through forests, fields and ethnic villages.Ngoi Kao Village is a new, relaxing destination, operated by the villagers themselves, offering bungalow accommodation on a peaceful, remote stretch of the Nam Ou River. From Ngoi Kao you can also take overnight excursions through mountainous terrain to nearby ethnic communities. For those looking for a scenic alternative to bus travel, boats can be taken downriver from Muang Ngoi to Luang Prabang.

There are many other areas of Luang Prabang Province that have yet to be traveled by
tourists, including the Nam Et/Phou Louei National Protected Area and the province’s
northeastern region near the border with Vietnam-a remote rural area with many
traditional Hmong communities.
